There are more than a hundred of those, each with their own description which adds a lot of context to the time period that the game takes place in. These artifacts not only grant stats bonuses or abilities, but they are also literal pieces of history that you can collect: these include newspapers, first aid kits that were sold by the Japanese, bottles of alcoholic beverages, etc. The player is able to explore Dadaocheng, talk with citizens and collect hidden artifacts that are also acquirable by donating money to the poor. There are also some RPG elements, something that seems mandatory in most modern action games nowadays. The Legend of Tianding is at its core, a side scroller, action-platformer game. Different from Detention, the focus of Tianding is less on its writing and more on the quality of its action, playability, and presentation. Coincidentally or not, The Legend of Tianding has the same solid foundation. It was certainly an educational experience as I knew absolutely nothing about Taiwan back then Detention opened my eyes and made me even more receptive to new cultures and ideas in general. Detention’s art and solid writing, not to mention that it was navigable with little clunkiness, kept me intrigued until I saw the credits roll. That game used the same basic premise as Tianding it was based on a real-life historical period of Taiwan. The first game I experienced from a Taiwanese developer was a story-driven horror game called Detention. Looking at the selection of indie titles we have nowadays, we can certainly say that we have some variety in regards to games based on less represented cultures. As a Taiwan-based indie developer, CGCG’s mission is to create games, especially action-oriented ones, that use Taiwan’s history and folktales as a background. Produced in a joint effort between Taiwanese indie developer CGCG and publisher Neon Doctrine, The Legend of Tianding is CGCG’s first released game. The Legend of Tianding is an action-platformer game with some RPG elements. It’s a story that’s getting a good treatment in the preview build we played, and the demo ended on a rather intriguing note. The Legend of Tianding is set to be released in October for PC and Nintendo Switch.Price: US$19.99 – Available Here Overview The Legend of Tianding is shaping up to be a fun side scrolling beat ‘em up, but just as important, it’s bringing a folk tale to more people of other cultures. It took a lot of attempts to get past this bit, and with every death Tianding loses some of the money he has collected. The issue is that the window to grapple in this scenario feels way too short with the arrow indicators only appearing briefly before Tianding is out of range. Sounds easy enough, but when there are two deadly polluted falls and a deadly pool of polluted water beneath you, there is a lot of things that can go wrong. One section toward the end of the preview build needs Tianding to grapple upwards using wheels as grapple points. For the most part, getting around is fine, though the grapple needs a little bit of work. Outside of the fighting, you need to navigate the levels using jumps, moves, and a grapple. The hardcore difficulty adds additional traps in the environment and makes enemies more dangerous, while casual will let you have an easier ride if you just want to experience the story. There were two difficulty modes to try out, with both casual and hardcore options. A bullet may hit you if you’re not paying attention, but you can also deflect them back towards enemies if you time it right. The fighting feels smooth and fast paced though you have to be aware of your surroundings at all times as enemies spawn in. Additionally, Tianding learns new moves such as the one inch punch and dragon kick, both of which do a good amount of damage and can push back enemies to give some breathing space. Tianding can dodge through attacks and this move becomes crucial as enemies rush him. These weapons can vary from bamboo poles to axes to guns, and if you get a weapon you do not like then you can discard it. The most basic attack sees Tianding hitting enemies with his blade and using a sash to disarm enemies so he can take their weapons. The combat system allows for quite a few tactical options. The sewers are far from quiet though, as both police and criminals look to take out Tianding, engaging in fights to subdue him. Much of the preview build actually takes you away from the streets and down into the sewers instead as Tianding looks for a way to enter Wang’s Tea House.
